Tanzania Exports Cotton, Imports Clothes—New Investment Aims to Fix That

Tanzania grows more cotton than its own textile mills can handle. Yet most of that raw fiber, known as lint, is shipped abroad. At the same time, local garment factories and fashion designers must buy fabric from other countries. That mismatch is a major gap in the nation's manufacturing sector. Now, new investment is targeting the problem. The goal is to build local processing capacity, create factory jobs, and keep more of the value of Tanzanian cotton inside the country. Currently, the textile industry cannot keep up with the cotton harvest. By closing this gap, Tanzania could turn its own raw materials into finished goods—boosting employment and reducing reliance on imported textiles.
