A Vermont school district received multiple threats after flying the Somali flag at a local high school.
The flag was raised at Burlington High School last week. School officials said it was a direct response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments. Trump had referred to the Somali community in Minnesota as “garbage.”
The gesture was intended to show solidarity with Somali students and their families. However, it triggered a backlash.
District leaders confirmed they are now working with police to investigate the threatening messages. Security has been increased at the school as a precaution.
In a statement, the district said it remains committed to being a welcoming place for all students. It condemned the threats as unacceptable.
