Archaeologists in Turkey have discovered a rare early Christian fresco. It depicts Jesus Christ as the "Good Shepherd" with distinctly Roman features.
The artwork was found inside a rock-cut tomb in the ancient region of Anatolia. Experts call it one of the most significant finds from the area's early Christian period.
In the painting, Jesus is shown as a young, beardless man. He carries a sheep on his shoulders, a common symbolic image from that era. His short hair and clean-shaven face are typical of Roman art, differing from later traditional depictions.
The discovery provides new insight into early Christian iconography, or symbolic art. It shows how Christian symbols blended with local Roman artistic styles during the religion's spread.
The tomb and fresco are now under state protection for further study.
