President John Dramani Mahama has directly intervened to stop a move in parliament that would have dismantled Ghana's main anti-corruption agency.
He ordered the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, and the Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Etsey Dafeamekpor, to withdraw their proposed bill. The legislation sought to repeal the act that created the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The OSP is an independent body tasked with investigating and prosecuting corruption cases. Its establishment was a major government initiative to fight graft.
The President's instruction cancels the parliamentary process for now. No public reason was given for the sudden withdrawal order.
This move keeps the controversial anti-corruption office intact, at least for the immediate future.
