The UK Home Secretary has ordered an independent investigation into the Metropolitan Police. The inquiry will examine whether hundreds of new officers were hired without correct background checks.
The special investigation follows concerns that roughly 300 recruits may pose a potential criminal risk. These officers joined the London police force between 2016 and 2023.
The policing inspectorate will conduct the inquiry. It will focus on whether required vetting procedures were missed during a period of rapid hiring.
Vetting is the process of checking a person's background. For police, this includes reviewing criminal records and personal history to ensure they are suitable for the job.
