A recent Russian missile attack on Ukraine's energy system caused major power outages in neighboring Moldova. This happened because Moldova's electricity grid is still connected to Ukraine's network.
The attack damaged a critical power line that supplies Moldova. This forced the country to use its own aging power plants. These plants could not meet demand, causing blackouts.
Moldova's government says this shows the country is too dependent on foreign energy. Most of its electricity usually comes from a plant in a breakaway region controlled by Russian-backed forces.
Experts say Moldova must speed up its connection to the European Union's power grid. This project is underway but will take two more years. Until then, Moldova remains vulnerable to shocks from the war next door.
