Hong Kong Man Accused of Posing as Fire Victim to Steal Aid Funds

A 36-year-old unemployed man has been remanded in custody in Hong Kong. He is accused of impersonating a victim of last month's deadly Tai Po fire to fraudulently claim financial aid.
Fung Chun-kit, a resident of Kwai Chung, appeared at Fanling Court on Friday. He did not enter a plea. Prosecutors requested more time to investigate.
Court documents state Fung successfully registered with the Social Welfare Department. He allegedly obtained HK$18,000 (US$2,313) in emergency funds. The money was intended for genuine victims of the fire.
The case has been adjourned. Fung will remain in custody until his next court hearing.
