A major new bank headquarters in Nigeria has received the highest international award for environmentally friendly construction.
The African Export-Import Bank's (Afreximbank) African Trade Centre in Abuja has been granted a LEED Platinum certification. The U.S. Green Building Council and Green Business Certification Inc. awarded the status.
LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a global benchmark. Platinum is its top rating for sustainable design, construction, and operation.
The certification means the building meets strict standards. These include high efficiency in energy and water use, reduced carbon emissions, and improved indoor air quality.
The African Trade Centre is now one of the most environmentally advanced buildings on the continent. Afreximbank announced the achievement on December 11, 2025.
