Spain Wildfire Death Toll Rises to 14 as Woman Dies from 70% Burns

A woman who suffered burns on 70% of her body in a Spanish wildfire has died, raising the total number of fatalities to 14. The patient was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at the Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville since the fire swept through the province of Almería. The regional government of Andalusia reported that the woman was admitted in "very serious" condition with burns covering 70% of her body. She was continuously treated by intensive care specialists and the hospital's plastic surgery and burn unit. The fire broke out on the afternoon of July 9 in the Almocáizar area, within the municipality of Los Gallardos. It spread across land in Bédar, Lubrín, Antas, and Sorbas, also reaching the Sierra de Cabrera-Bédar Special Conservation Zone. The emergency required medical attention for 18 people. Four were transferred to the major burns unit at Virgen del Rocío. Following this latest death, three other patients remain hospitalized in Seville. Spain's Infoca firefighting plan declared the fire extinguished at 9:00 PM on July 24, after it had burned approximately 5,200 hectares.
