A cryptocurrency founder has been sentenced for his role in a massive fraud that wiped out $40 billion in market value.
Do Kwon, the creator of the TerraUSD and Luna tokens, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud and wire fraud in August. He apologized for his actions at that time.
His sentencing this week is the final chapter in one of the largest financial collapses in crypto history. In 2022, TerraUSD, a "stablecoin" designed to hold a steady value, broke its link to the U.S. dollar. This triggered the catastrophic failure of both it and its sister token, Luna.
The crash erased an estimated $40 billion from the market and caused severe damage across the global cryptocurrency industry.
