Japanese University Startups Build AI Robot Arms for Surgery and Delicate Work

TOKYO – A new wave of Japanese university startups is developing robot arms powered by artificial intelligence to handle tasks too delicate for human hands. These machines aim to assist in fields like micro-surgery, electronics assembly, and food preparation, where precision is critical. The technology uses AI to learn and adapt to small, unpredictable movements. Unlike traditional industrial robots, which follow rigid, pre-programmed instructions, these arms can adjust their grip and force in real time. For example, a robot could sew a tiny blood vessel or flip a fragile pancake without crushing it. “Current robots are strong but clumsy,” said one lead researcher at a Tokyo university lab. “We are teaching them to feel.” The startups, spun off from university engineering departments, have already attracted investment from medical device companies and food manufacturers. They face competition from established robotics firms in Germany and the United States, but their focus on fine motor skills gives them a niche. Experts say the robots could help Japan address its labor shortage in elderly care and manufacturing. The first commercial models are expected within two years.
