CAIRO (AP) — Mediators have made progress in efforts to stop the war between the United States and Iran, two regional officials said Monday. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Qatar and Pakistan are leading talks to get both sides back to a ceasefire deal. The news comes after three days with no attacks from either side. This pause follows two weeks of heavy bombing that raised fears of a full-scale war. The U.S. stopped attacks after targeting Iranian coastal areas. The conflict began when Iran fired at ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global oil. U.S. President Donald Trump is "giving talks some space," said Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Iran has also stopped attacks, its army spokesperson told state TV on Sunday. One official described the progress in talks as "significant." He said mediators are working with Iran and Oman on a plan to manage ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said no direct talks are happening with the U.S. But messages are being exchanged through mediators. Shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz is at a three-week low, a U.S. Navy maritime body said Sunday. No new attacks were confirmed in the past 72 hours. Gas prices have risen again as global energy supplies remain uncertain. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to meet with Trump in Washington on Tuesday. He said he "fully" backs Trump's efforts.
