A Turkish transgender activist known as Hazer has publicly declared conscientious objection to mandatory military service.
In a statement, Hazer said the move is a protest against serving in what was called "the army of the patriarchy." The activist stated that LGBTQ+ people and all identities considered outside societal norms are ignored within the military institution.
Turkey requires compulsory military service for all assigned male at birth, with no formal exemption for transgender people who identify as women. Objectors face potential legal prosecution and social stigma.
