Firefighters are struggling to bring the flames under control as a brutal heatwave continues to bake southern Europe. In Spain, air temperatures are expected to exceed 44°C. The Mediterranean Sea is also experiencing extreme heat, with parts of it now 5°C hotter than normal. Researchers warn that the situation could worsen, and they have not ruled out “Dantesque” scenarios—a term used to describe catastrophic, hellish fire conditions—as the infernos intensify.
