New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Tuesday he lacks the legal power to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but called on federal authorities to do so if Netanyahu visits the United States later this year.
In a video posted to social media, Mamdani called Netanyahu a “war criminal” and the “architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people.” He acknowledged that the mayor’s office does not have jurisdiction to make such an arrest.
Mamdani’s remarks come as Netanyahu’s potential visit to the US remains unconfirmed. The mayor’s statement adds to growing international criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
