Spain Wildfires Rage: 100,000 Hectares Burned, 40 Villages Evacuated

At least 100,000 hectares have been destroyed by wildfires in Spain so far in 2026, according to preliminary data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). The main fire is in northern Guadalajara province. It started in La Mierla on Thursday and is "far from being controlled." The blaze has already burned 32,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of 40 villages. A second fire started Tuesday in the same province, in the town of Selas within the Alto Tajo natural park. This fire has forced six villages to evacuate and closed the N-211 highway linking Selas to Aragoncillo. Overnight, several towns in Soria province were also locked down. The regional government of Castilla y León has sent more firefighters and equipment to fight the La Mierla fire as it spreads toward their area. That region is also fighting a separate fire in Brieva, where residents from eight villages have been evacuated. Four provincial roads were closed by early afternoon. In Teruel, the Ejulve fire has burned about 1,100 hectares. The town of Molinos remains evacuated. Meanwhile, the Plan fire in the Aragonese Pyrenees is still active. Local authorities estimate it has burned between 80 and 100 hectares.
