Scientists have combined artificial intelligence with CRISPR, the gene-editing tool, to create a more precise and powerful version. The new system, called “AI-CRISPR,” uses a machine-learning model to design guide RNAs—the molecules that direct CRISPR to cut DNA. The AI predicts which guide RNAs will work best, reducing errors and off-target effects.
In lab tests, the upgraded tool edited genes with higher accuracy than standard CRISPR. Researchers say this could speed up treatments for genetic diseases, such as sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis. The work was published in *Nature Biotechnology*.
“This is a major step forward,” said lead author Dr. Li Wei of MIT. “AI helps us avoid trial and error, making gene therapy safer and faster.”
The team plans to test AI-CRISPR in animal models next. If successful, human trials could begin within three years.
