Court Case Against Turkey’s Main Opposition Party Delayed Until September

A legal challenge that could overturn the leadership of Turkey’s main opposition party, the CHP, has been stalled until September. The case file, which concerns the party’s 38th ordinary congress, only reached the Court of Cassation (Yargıtay) 60 days after a lower court’s decision. Because Turkey’s judicial summer break has now begun, the high court will not review the file until the new term starts in September. The lower court had ruled that the congress was invalid due to “absolute nullity,” a legal term meaning the proceedings were fundamentally void from the start.
