Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called on Venezuela's government to choose a democratic path. He urged President Nicolás Maduro to pursue an amnesty and a transitional government.
Petro made the statement on social media. He said, "Bolivar’s homeland is defended with democracy." This references Simón Bolivar, the historical liberator of both nations.
The comments come ahead of Venezuela's presidential election in July. Petro's proposal suggests a political solution to the country's long-standing crisis.
The Colombian leader did not specify details of the proposed amnesty. The call for a transitional government is a direct appeal for political compromise. Venezuela has not yet officially responded.
