The United States is working with five countries in the region, including Syria, on a program to develop alternative routes to the Strait of Hormuz. The plan is based on a principle called "precautionary delivery," according to Thomas Barak, the U.S. presidential envoy for Syria and Iraq.
Barak announced the initiative, which aims to reduce reliance on the critical waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage in the Persian Gulf through which a significant portion of the world's oil shipments pass.
The envoy did not provide details on the specific alternative routes or a timeline for the program.
