Ukraine defense minister fired; protests erupt in Kyiv

KYIV – The dismissal of Ukraine’s popular Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has sparked political turmoil and street protests across the country. Fedorov, known as a reform-minded leader, announced his removal on Facebook on the evening of July 15. He called it a “great honor” to have served in the role. The next day, July 16, spontaneous protests broke out in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. Demonstrators expressed shock and anger over the decision.
