More than 50 organizations providing abortion support and LGBTQ+ content report having their accounts restricted or removed by Meta. The action affects the company's platforms Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Campaigners call it one of the biggest waves of censorship on Meta's platforms in years. The removals began in October and targeted groups in Europe, the UK, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
Some accounts provided abortion hotlines. Others posted non-explicit nudity, which triggered warnings. Many of the affected organizations serve tens of thousands of people.
The takedowns appear to be part of a growing effort by Meta to limit content about reproductive health and queer communities globally.
