A thick cloud of smoke from hundreds of wildfires burning in Canada blanketed much of the US northeast and southern Canada on Thursday. The smoke sharply worsened air quality in major cities including New York, Chicago, Detroit, and Toronto. Health authorities urged residents to stay indoors. The warning comes just three days before New Jersey's MetLife Stadium is set to host the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.
