European Union ambassadors have approved new sanctions targeting Russia's so-called "shadow fleet," according to media reports. The measures will hit 43 vessels used to transport oil, undermining Western efforts to cap Moscow's energy revenues.
This "shadow fleet" consists of older tankers that operate outside Western insurance and price-cap mechanisms. By sanctioning the ships directly, the EU aims to disrupt this crucial logistics network.
Separately, the sanctions package also targets 12 individuals and two organizations accused of destabilizing the EU. Those named include Russian military intelligence officers, members of the Russian Valdai Discussion Club, and citizens of the United States, France, and Switzerland alleged to be working for Moscow.
The formal adoption of these measures by all EU member states is expected soon.
