Ontario requested federal help on Thursday to evacuate residents from remote northern communities as wildfires raged across Canada. The smoke has already drifted south, bringing hazardous air quality to Toronto and much of the northeastern United States.
“We need to make forests more resilient to climate change,” said Jonathan Boucher, a researcher at the Canadian Forest Service, in an interview with FRANCE 24. He stressed the importance of better management and prevention measures to reduce wildfire risks.
The evacuation request highlights the growing strain on Canadian resources. Officials are scrambling to protect remote areas where fires threaten lives and infrastructure. Meanwhile, health warnings remain in effect across affected U.S. states, urging residents to limit outdoor activity.
