Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, has accused the Trump administration of trying to interfere in German elections. The warning comes after the U.S. State Department announced a new grant program offering up to $3 million to European groups.
The funding is meant for charities, thinktanks, and individuals that support causes aligned with the "Make America Great Again" (Maga) movement. The official focus is on "sovereignty, migration, and censorship."
Merz said the scheme risks destabilizing European politics. He urged Washington to stop the program, calling it an unacceptable attempt to influence Germany’s upcoming vote.
