The Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo is spreading faster than health workers can contain it, a top World Health Organization (WHO) official said Tuesday.
Dr. Michael Ryan, the WHO’s emergencies chief, made the statement after returning from a visit to Bunia, a city in Ituri province. Ituri is one of the areas hardest hit by the virus.
Ryan said the outbreak “continues to outpace the response efforts.” Health officials do not know the source of most new cases, making it difficult to stop the virus from spreading to new people.
