Iceland has announced it will not participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest. It becomes the fifth country to boycott the event.
The country joins Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, and the Netherlands in withdrawing. All five cite the same reason: ongoing disagreements with the contest's organizer, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
The main issue is the EBU's handling of the 2024 contest. Several countries were unhappy that Israel was allowed to compete during the war in Gaza. They argue the EBU applied its political neutrality rules inconsistently.
This growing boycott presents a major challenge for Eurovision. The event markets itself as a non-political celebration of music and European unity. The loss of five participating broadcasters threatens this image.
The EBU has not yet commented on the boycott. Planning for the 2026 contest is now under increased pressure.
