A little-known unit of Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency operated through an Aeroflot office near Japan’s national police headquarters, according to a New York Times report. The spies used business and logistics connections in Japan to obtain equipment for Russia’s war effort. The report did not specify what technology was acquired or how long the operation lasted.
