DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — President Donald Trump threatened Iran on Saturday, saying 1,000 missiles are ready to strike if the country acts on threats made during a funeral for its late supreme leader.
The warning came after mourners at Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral openly called for Trump’s killing. The event has deepened tensions in the Middle East as a temporary ceasefire deal shows signs of collapse.
Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that U.S. forces have “1000 Missiles… Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran.” He added that the military would “completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran” if Tehran follows through on its threats.
The U.S. has also demanded that Iran issue a public statement saying the Strait of Hormuz is open for ships. The strait is a vital waterway for global oil shipments.
Tehran has refused. Instead, Iran insists it must control the strait and charge ships for passage. This breaks with decades of international law that treats the waterway as open to all.
The standoff follows days of U.S. airstrikes on Iran and Iranian retaliatory attacks across the region. The violence began after Iran struck three ships in the strait earlier this week.
