A U.S. Army soldier awarded the Medal of Honor has been identified, more than 80 years after he disappeared in World War II.
The soldier’s remains were recently accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. This agency works to find and identify missing U.S. military personnel.
He received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest award for military valor. He earned it for his actions in combat before he went missing.
His identification closes a decades-long case for his family and the U.S. government. The specific details of his identity and the location of his recovery will be released at a later date.
The soldier will be buried with full military honors in his hometown. The ceremony date is still being arranged.
