NAIROBI — A senior Kenyan lawyer has warned the head of the country’s election commission that the responsibility for preventing a repeat of past electoral violence falls on him. Senior Counsel Philip Murgor cautioned Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon that the commission’s leadership must safeguard Kenya’s electoral integrity. The warning comes as the nation prepares for upcoming polls, with memories of the disputed 2007 election still fresh. That vote triggered weeks of deadly clashes. Murgor stressed that the IEBC chairperson cannot shift blame if the process fails.
