UN Agency: Make Online Abuse a Crime in Namibia

📡 101 · 1 min read ·
A United Nations agency is urging Namibia to criminalize digital violence. This call comes as online abuse against women in the country increases. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) says digital violence must be included in national laws and policies. It argues this will ensure the crime is treated as seriously as physical offenses. Digital violence, also called online abuse, includes threats, harassment, and the sharing of private images without consent. These acts often target women and girls. The UNFPA states that current laws may not adequately cover these digital crimes. Explicit legislation would provide clearer protection for victims and consequences for perpetrators. Namibia has not yet announced any planned changes to its legal code in response to this recommendation.
