Ebola Outbreak in Congo Now Fastest Growing Ever; Violence and Misinformation Fuel Spread

📡 Guardian · 1 min read ·
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is now the fastest growing in history. Nearly two months after the government confirmed the first cases, the virus continues to spread rapidly. As of July 8, government data shows 1,759 infections and 600 deaths. The virus has also crossed into Uganda, where 20 cases and two deaths have been reported. Health officials say the rapid spread is fueled by three factors: misinformation, violence against health workers, and cuts to aid programs. Attacks on treatment centers and volunteers are making it harder to contain the disease.
