The rebel group M23 is advancing toward the strategic city of Uvira in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This is according to United Nations reports.
The UN says the rebels are supported by elements of the Rwandan army. Uvira is a major transport hub in South Kivu province. It connects the region to neighboring Burundi.
Burundian troops are now working with the Congolese military. Their goal is to stop the rebel advance.
This fighting continues despite a recent peace agreement. The M23's move on Uvira threatens a major humanitarian and trade corridor in central Africa.
