The daughter of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf today in Oslo. Machado, a prominent critic of the government, did not attend the ceremony.
Machado has been in hiding for almost a year. She was still expected to arrive in Oslo later on the day of the ceremony.
The Nobel Committee awarded Machado the prize for her peaceful, decade-long fight for democracy and human rights in Venezuela. In a recorded speech, she called the award "a tribute to the millions of Venezuelans who resist."
