A new law in Australia now bans children under 16 from having social media accounts. The government says it is tackling the "addiction economy" of these platforms. We spoke to Jess Butcher, a tech entrepreneur. She founded the digital wellbeing group ScrollAware. Butcher usually opposes heavy government rules for technology. But she supports this ban. She says the harm social media causes to young users is too great. Tech companies, she argues, have failed to make meaningful changes to protect children. "The scale of the harms that these platforms are causing" requires action, Butcher says.
