NATO cannot afford to be “naive” about China’s growing military power, Secretary General Mark Rutte warned on Monday. Speaking at a pre-summit press conference in Ankara, Turkey, Rutte argued that the security of the Indo-Pacific and Europe is now “more intertwined.”
He pointed to China’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine as a clear example of this link. Rutte also addressed questions about a recent Chinese nuclear-powered submarine that test-fired a missile into the Pacific Ocean. “NATO must see the reality,” he said, urging members to stay alert as Beijing ramps up its military capabilities.
