An oil tanker was struck and set on fire by an “unknown projectile” off the coast of Oman on Monday, near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The UKMTO reported that the incident occurred about 8 nautical miles (15 kilometers) east of Limah. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes.
The attack comes despite a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and ongoing efforts to secure a lasting peace agreement in the region. No group has claimed responsibility for the strike. Authorities are investigating the source of the projectile.
