Hong Kong will make artificial intelligence the core of its next phase of economic growth, the city’s leader said Tuesday.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu told the South China Morning Post’s China Conference 2026 that AI is the “central plank” of Hong Kong’s development strategy. He said the city’s first five-year blueprint and an upcoming policy address will guide this shift.
Lee added that Hong Kong’s “one country, two systems” framework and its focus on innovation give it a unique edge. This position, he argued, allows the city to connect global opportunities in an AI-driven world.
