Sweden’s top military commander, General Michael Claesson, says the world is becoming more dangerous. He warns that Russia may want to test NATO’s defenses. His statement has been sharply criticized by Finland’s President Alexander Stubb.
Claesson, Sweden’s Supreme Commander, told reporters that ignoring such a risk would be a failure of his duty. “It would be a dereliction of duty if I overlooked this risk,” he said.
The Finnish president rejected the warning, calling it unnecessary. The disagreement highlights a rare split between the two Nordic neighbors, who are both now NATO members.
Claesson did not provide specific evidence for his claim. He stressed that his role is to prepare for worst-case scenarios, not to predict the future.
