UK and Denmark Demand Human Rights Convention Reform to Curb Populists

The leaders of the United Kingdom and Denmark have jointly called for a major reform of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). They link the current system directly to rising populist political movements across Europe. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated that the existing framework must be overhauled. They argue it is being exploited to block the deportation of some migrants. The two leaders warn that without significant changes, populist parties will continue to gain public support. They believe reform is urgent to address public concerns on immigration and to restore trust in the system. The ECHR is an international treaty to protect human rights across Europe. A key court, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, enforces it. The convention is separate from the European Union, meaning non-EU members like the UK are still bound by it.
