Europe’s record-breaking heat wave has triggered a sudden surge in demand for Chinese air conditioners. But this is not simply a trade story. It reveals a deeper problem: climate change is arriving faster than Europe’s housing, infrastructure, and industrial policies can adapt.
This summer, temperatures across Europe hit dangerous highs. Thousands of people have died from heat-related causes. In response, European countries are scrambling to import air conditioners from China, the world’s largest producer.
The numbers are striking. Chinese exports of air conditioners to Europe have jumped sharply. Yet the rush for cooling machines highlights a failure in long-term planning. Many European buildings were designed for cooler climates. They lack insulation, shading, or efficient cooling systems. Public infrastructure, such as hospitals and schools, is also unprepared.
Experts say Europe must rethink its urban design and energy policies. Without faster adaptation, the next heat wave could be even deadlier. For now, Chinese air conditioners offer a temporary fix—but not a solution.
