Thousands of protesters blocked roads to the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party’s annual conference in Erfurt on Saturday. The demonstrators, including members of unions, civil society groups, and left-wing parties, opposed the far-right party ahead of regional elections that could see the AfD take power at the state level for the first time.
Police deployed large numbers of officers, including reinforcements from across Germany, to secure the two-day event. The slogan “We won’t tolerate this” was heard among the crowd.
