Myanmar’s military government has refused a request from the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to meet with detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi. In late May, the junta announced it had moved the 81-year-old Nobel laureate from prison to house arrest. The ASEAN chair had sought the meeting to discuss the country’s worsening political crisis. The junta did not provide a reason for the refusal, which marks the latest setback in regional efforts to mediate an end to Myanmar’s civil conflict.
