BRUSSELS – The European Union’s top diplomat said Monday he will propose fresh sanctions against companies and organizations that help Russia produce weapons, following Moscow’s latest wave of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell announced the plan in a statement condemning the strikes, which hit civilian infrastructure and killed at least five people. “These attacks show Russia’s continued brutality,” Borrell said. “We must cut off the supply chains that fuel its war machine.”
The proposed sanctions would target entities outside Russia that provide components, technology, or financing for the country’s military-industrial complex. Borrell did not name specific companies or countries, but said the measures aim to “close loopholes” in existing restrictions.
European leaders have repeatedly condemned Russia’s air campaign, which has intensified in recent weeks. The new sanctions package requires approval from all 27 EU member states before taking effect.
