An autistic artist from Scotland has won the UK's most famous contemporary art award. Nnena Kalu, 59, received the Turner Prize on Tuesday.
Kalu, who is from Glasgow, creates large hanging sculptures. She makes them by wrapping materials like fabric, rope, and tape. The prize jury praised her work as a powerful exploration of repetition and the human body.
Her victory is seen as breaking a barrier in the art world. The disability charity Sense called her nomination "incredibly significant." Kalu is the first openly autistic artist to win the Turner Prize since it began in 1984.
She was chosen from a shortlist of four other artists. This group included an acclaimed painter from Iraq.
