Ukraine has begun serial production of a new surface-to-air missile system built on the chassis of a Soviet-era Strela-10 vehicle. The system uses a laser-guided missile and is already operational, protecting Ukrainian airspace.
The modified system, referred to as RYF, adapts the old Soviet platform with modern Ukrainian technology. Unlike the original Strela-10, which relied on infrared guidance, the new version uses laser guidance for improved accuracy against aerial threats.
Ukrainian engineers developed the system to address urgent air-defense needs. The laser-guided missile allows the system to engage targets more reliably, even in conditions where heat-seeking missiles may struggle.
Serial production means Ukraine can now deploy multiple units. The RYF is currently active, with reports confirming it is "guarding the sky." This marks a practical step in Ukraine’s effort to strengthen its air defenses using locally built solutions.
