Giant portraits of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei now hang from Tehran’s Grand Mosalla as workers rush to prepare for his grand funeral. Khamenei, Iran’s late supreme leader, was killed at age 86 in US-Israeli air strikes on his compound in central Tehran. The attack occurred on the first day of the Middle East war.
His funeral was initially delayed at the height of the conflict. It will now take place as Iran and the United States observe a fragile ceasefire after signing a preliminary deal to halt the fighting. Khamenei was a spiritual figure for many Shia Muslims worldwide.
