At least 15 journalists in South Africa have been attacked or threatened in recent months while covering anti-migrant protests, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
One victim, reporter Sakhiseni Nxumalo, was covering a march that turned into a deadly attack on foreign nationals. Demonstrators targeted him because of his dark skin, mistaking him for a migrant.
The attacks come as a deadline for a government crackdown on undocumented migrants approaches. The CPJ’s findings highlight growing dangers for reporters in the region.
